Born Zell am Harmersbach, Germany, 1958. Studied at the Staatlichen Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, 1977-1985. First major retrospective, Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, traveled to nine museums between 2001 and 2004, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Oslo, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, and Tate Liverpool. Solo exhibitions include: The Sprengel Museum Hannover, 2007; Moderna Musée, Stockholm, 2007; Kunsthalle Budapest, 2008; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, 2009; Museum für Neue Kunst, Germany, 2009; Castello di Rivoli, Turin, 2009; Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga,2011; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, 2011. Ruff's photography was featured at the 46th Venice Biennale, 1995. Winner of several awards including International Center of Photography Infinity Award, New York, 2006. He lives in Düsseldorf.
