Lot Essay
A study for a group of ephebes painted on the parapet of the dome of Parma cathedral that Correggio decorated in 1524-25. There is not much difference between the drawing and the fresco except that in the latter the arms of the youth at the right conceal his face and his legs are hidden by the head of an apostle.
As with other very linear studies for the dome (see, for example, the drawing of two ephebes in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antigua, Lisbon, di Giampaolo and Muzzi, op. cit., no. 58), it seems that Correggio began by tracing the outlines from earlier and now lost studies and then worked on the shading, most noticeably on the present sheet that of the figure on the right.
Although the architectural studies on the verso cannot be related to a particular project, they provide a rare instance of such designs by Correggio.
