Lot Essay

With Cartier original fitted presentation box and white gold chain. The monogram on the caseback is most likely the royal monogram of Queen Margherita of Italy. One can safely assume this watch was a gift from the Queen.

Queen Margareth of Italy
Born on 20 November 1851, Margherita Maria Teresa Giovanna di Savoia ruled as Queen of Italy - the first queen of Italy, actually - from 1878 to 1900, when her husband Umberto died, and she became Queen Mother. She was very much loved by the people, also because of her social ability and savoir-faire at public apeparances, especially toward the lower classes. Few know that one of the many proofs of the love of her people for her is the pizza Margherita, so called in her honour, and whose ingredients - green basil, white cheese and red tomato - symbolize the Italian flag.

A lover and supporter of arts, she supported and encouraged many artists, and founded several cultural institutions. She was furthermore a filantropist and a benefactor of many charities, most notably the Red cross.
