He entered the military academy in 1882 and he was appointed major general in 1890. He accessed the throne in 1913, after the murder of his father by anarchists, and ruled until 1922, when he abdicated and the throne passed to his son George II. He was married to Princess Sophia of Prussia, from whom he had 6 children.
