Lot Essay

Although mainly known for his chalk drawings, Volterrano, as documented by various sources, did also execute pastels. A pastel portrait of Antonio Baldinucci which is similar in style to the present drawing is in the Louvre, Paris (inv. 1174; N. Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800, online edition [https://www.pastellists.com/]; Volterrano).
