Lot Essay

Another study of Saint Roch, also drawn on the recto and verso, but executed in pen and brown ink over black chalk, was formerly in the Perman collection (exh. cat., Venice, 1966, op. cit., no. 71). Both drawings bear a characteristic inscription by a Venetian 18th Century collector, today called the Reliable Venetian Hand, formerly identified as Anton Maria Zanetti and known for the accuracy of his attributions. No painting by Piazzetta of this subject is known.
