A similar version of this panel ('The Cheese Kitchen, Pollig Monastery', c.1904) was sold at Sotheby's Australia, 30 April 1995, lot 105 (A$5,750). For both panels see The Lone Hand, 1 April, 1908, pp.615-21: 'In his early work there is something irresistibly reminiscent of the Dutch "little masters" in the perfect painting of minutiae ... This little work ["The old soup kitchen of the Oberammergau Monastery"] is rich in the harmonious browns and greys of time; but the sure and simple treatment of the blackened chimney-piece and the cooking pots, drawn with such surety and sympathy, make of this slight subject a work of purest art.'
