A RARE PAINTED ENAMEL VASE
18TH CENTURY
The vase, with animal head-and-loose ring handles, is painted in the famille rose palette with two large panels, one depicting Shoulao and his attendant in a rocky landscape looking up at a crane in flight above, and the other depicting the rebus haiwu tianchou, 'adding a chip to the house in the sea', or 'may you live to a ripe old age'. The panels are within phoenix borders surrounded by floral scroll on an aubergine ground between ruyi borders. The neck and foot are decorated with bats and clouds against a pale blue ground.
