'Ho desiderato da molto tempo approfondire un'indagine su come il fuoco brucia e consuma, capire la natura della combustione, e su come tutto può vivere e morire nella combustione per creare un'unità perfetta'.

Una superficie luminosa di cellotex rosso impreziosita da frammenti di plastica bruciati e anneriti in maniera drammatica, Rosso plastica di Alberto Burri è una delle prime opere appartenente alla serie delle Combustioni plastiche iniziata dall'artista intorno al 1960. Eseguito nel 1961, l'opera risale ad un periodo di grande sperimentazione nell'attività di Burri, il quale, con invenzione incessante, continuava ad indagare sulle forti possibilità estetiche dell'uso di materiali industriali e a sottoporli alla forza elementare del fuoco. Adoperando la plastica come tela e la fiamma ossidrica come pennello, ancora una volta Burri ha allargato e ridefinito in modo significativo il confine della pittura.

A glowing red cellotex plane adorned with dramatically scorched and cindered pieces of burnt plastic, Alberto Burri's Rosso Plastica is an early work belonging to a series of progressive Combustioni plastiche or plastic combustions that the artist began around 1960. Executed in 1961, this work dates from a period of immense experimentation in Burri's career, as he continued with ceaseless invention to explore the powerful aesthetic possibilities of using industrial materials and subjecting them to the elemental power of fire. Taking plastic as his canvas and the blowtorch as his paintbrush Burri once more expanded and significantly redefined the boundaries of painting.
Having since his earliest days as an artist explored and exploited the physical properties of materials, Burri first turned to the elemental force of fire in 1955. These first Combustioni were made with paper before the artist moved on to burlap and wood, and in the late 1950s, plastic. Using a blowtorch, the artist set fire to the plastic, using the heat, flames and smoke to sculpt and manipulate the melting and malleable material. One of the first European avant-garde artists to consistently use fire in his art, Burri himself was actively involved in the artistic process, entering into a intimate dialogue with the material, blowing the flames in certain directions and pressing and pulling at the plastic itself to help create the highly distinctive and unique rippling, folded and blistered surface. 'Nothing is left to chance', Burri explained of his combustive process, 'What I do here is the most controlled and controllable type of painting You need to control the material and this is achieved by mastering the technique' (A. From the throes of this fiery destruction Burri wrought a new form of raw beauty, creating works such as Rosso plastica that are characterised by fiercely dramatic and opulent surfaces composed of flowing rivulets, indentations and concavities. Shocked by the catastrophic destruction that had befallen his native Italy and deeply affected by both his experiences as a medic in the army and his internment in a prisoner of war camp in Texas, USA, following the Second World War, Burri, like many of his European counterparts, realised that pictorial mimesis and illusionism was futile and that a new mode of picture making needed to be found. Using a range of unorthodox materials - burlap, iron and sacking for example - and novel artistic processes such as sewing and burning, Burri forged an entirely new conception of art based solely on the physical properties of its composition, creating works that revealed and revelled in their own inherent materiality. This new and raw beauty was truly radical: expunged of representation, it was created from destruction, the embodiment of a new and elemental art.
