‘At first the sign within us has a short, fantastic life, a solitary and absolute one; more than any other form it preserves its quality in the swiftness of the gesture: its cerebral or sensuous origin, for instance. Signs exchange this solitary existence of theirs, and the pattern they create by interweaving and introducing themselves into the surface of the painting represents life with its endless variations and indicates to the viewer a way of recognizing and understanding himself. My aim is to represent the vital impulse that exists in the world’
