Lot Essay

A superb example of the reference, the timepiece is bestowed with a rare and elegant black dial with applied Breguet numerals. In excellent overall condition, the wristwatch is an extremely rare find at auction and represents one of the most collectible variants of the acclaimed reference 5050. Sold in 2009, it was part of an important collection and has been kept with care throughout the years. Highly coveted, the watch is futhermore offered with its accessories and certificate.

Reference 5050
Introduced at the Basel fair in 1993, reference 5050 was the first Patek Philippe wristwatch manufactured in series to feature a retrograde date.

First available with a silvered dial with applied Roman numerals, an aperture for the phases of the moon and outer railway minute divisions, growing demand from clients lead Patek Philippe to introduce a second series of the reference. The second version, such as the present timepiece, featured applied baton indexes, a modified moon phase display in form of a subsidiary dial, outer beady minute divisions and the addition of the designation “Automatic”. The third series was crafted with applied Roman numerals, pearled minute divisions and a moon-phase aperture.

Discontinued in 2002, reference 5050 is highly sought-after and considered as a modern classic.
