The present early Datejust is preserved in very good overall condition, featuring the alternate red and black “roulette” date indication. Its appeal is further enhanced by the presence of the period accessories.
Reference 6305 was in production for only four years from 1952 until 1956 and available in a variety of materials.
The Datejust was launched in 1945 in time for Rolex’s 40th anniversary and is perhaps more synonymous with the company than any other model. It is one of the most enduring watches in their long history and certainly one that greatly contributed to the firm’s fame and the watch market in general. Named Datejust because the date changed exactly at midnight and was therefore always “just”, the model has a waterproof Oyster case and sweep centre seconds. The famous magnifier over the date nicknamed the cyclops was introduced in 1957.
Naturally the design of the Datejust has evolved over the years much to the delight of collectors who now find a rich variety of different dials, cases and references, each with their own unique attractions.
