Lot Essay

Vuillard spent the summer of 1910 and 1911 at the Villa Les Pavillons in Criqueboeuf near Villerville-sur-mer in Normandy. This drawing is a full-scale project for the 1910 painting Dans la villa (A. Salomon and G. Cogeval, no. VIII-371). The three principal figures represented in the foreground are Marcelle Aron, on the left, Lucy Hessel—a close friend and confidante of the artist—on the right with the young Pierre Aron.
