Varlin settled in 1965 in Bondo. It was in the Bregaglia village where he also met Serafino Corbetta. The art collector Corbetta was head physician in Chiavenna and at the same time a lecturer at the University of Milan. Varlin and Corbetta had a lively, intellectual exchange as well as a close friendship. So, it is not surprising that Varlin depicted the professor more than ten different times. A few years before our work was created, he was portrayed by Alberto Giacometti, with whom Corbetta regularly met in Chiavenna. Perhaps Varlin even knew of the portrait by Giacometti so that the restrained colour that is common to both paintings is more than just coincidence.
