Lot Essay

This group of extremely rare and previously undescribed etchings consists of prints from two distinct series, probably by two different hands. The first depicts castles in different areas of Southern Germany, including Burg Horneck, Schleiden, Willenberg, Hohentwiel, Fleckenstein, Kronenburg, and Kloster (?). The other series of slightly larger plates shows castles and landmarks along the Middle Rhine, including Rheinfels, Burg Katz and the Lorelei, Ehrenbreitstein, Cappel (?), Loewenstein, Braubach, Milem (?), Liebenstein, Drachenfels, Pfalzgrafenstein and Kaiserswerth.
