Lot Essay

This is a reversed copy after Goltzius' chiaroscuro woodcut of nearly the same size. Only one other example appears to be known, an impression without the monogram in the Albertina, Vienna. We are grateful to Marjolein Leesberg for her help in cataloguing this lot. She suggested that the present impression might be an earlier state, before the monogram was burnished out, and also put forward the attribution to Lucas Kilian.
