On 9 December, Christie’s Design department in New York will present exceptional works by 20th and 21st century artists and architects in our annual auction Design. Our sale with over 160 lots includes early work by important glass makers in France, Emile Gallé and Daum from The Collection of Dr. Thomas Chua. French Art Deco masterpieces are represented by a highly important green shagreen suite by André Groult, iconic metalworks by Albert Cheuret, and distinctive designs by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Armand Albert Rateau and Eugène Printz. This auction will also include important mid-century works by prestigious artists such as Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, Serge Mouille, and Alexandre Noll.
Our highlighted collection, Property from the Estate of Ruth S. Stanton, offers a unique opportunity to explore post-war iconic designs by French master cabinetmaker Jean Royère including beautiful straw marquetry and models from the highly desirable ‘Ondulation’ and ‘Croisillon’ series. Other masterworks by the artist include an exceptional ‘Ours Polaire’ salon suite.
We have the distinct honor of presenting Bertoia Masterworks from the Private Collection of Florence Knoll Bassett, an incredible glimpse into the relationship between artist and patron, designer and supporter, with five outstanding sculptures by Harry Bertoia from the personal collection of Florence Knoll Bassett.
The second-half 20th century is embodied by iconic works by Les Lalanne, including a ‘Mouton de Laine’ sheep and two ottomans, a ‘Carpe d’Or’ by François-Xavier Lalanne and a superb ‘Crocoseat’ chair by Claude Lalanne. Finally, the late 20th/21st century is ushered in with contemporary glass works by American greats William Morris and Dan Dailey, among others, Property from the Estate of Debbie and Bud Menin.
