Christie’s Design New York is pleased to present our Spring auction of important design by 20th and 21st century artists and designers. Our sale is headlined by a rare ‘Table Berceau aux Renards’ by Diego Giacometti from Property from a Distinguished New York Collection and two lamps by Alberto Giacometti, Property from a member of the Matisse family. Bronze sculptures by Rembrandt Bugatti, including a superb ‘Lionne a la boule’, ‘Lion de l’Atlas’ and ‘Jaguar Accroupi’, will parade in animalia of all variety, shapes and mediums such as François-Xavier Lalanne ‘Mouton de pierre’ and ‘Transhumant’, and an important ‘Table aux antilopes’ table.
Works of important French and American glass makers, Emile Gallé and Tiffany Studios, property from The Collection of Dr. Thomas Chua, and Property from a Private Connecticut Collection, will include an important ‘Laburnum’ table lamp and a ‘Peony’ floor lamp. These turn of the century designs will complement early craftsman Frank Lloyd Wright and his window from the Willetts House, Highland Park, Illinois.
The modernist eye of the 1930s-50s is showcased by way of Paul Dupre-Lafon, Pierre Chareau, and Georges Jouve all from highlighted collection, Modernist Vision: Art and Design from the Estate of Annette Friedland. Additional works include Jean Royère and his important ‘Flaque’ table, Property from a Private Manhattan Collection. American modernism is represented by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings’ iconic ‘Mesa’ table, Property from an Upper West Side, Manhattan, Collection, and by a rare Harry Bertoia necklace from the 1940s, in addition to examples of the artists’ celebrated body of work, the ‘Sonambient’.
The June sale will have highlighted collections including The Miottel Museum: Highlights from the S.S. Normandie, to showcase important works from the historical ocean liner by French Art Deco designers such as Jean Dunand, Jean Dupas and Pierre Patout. We will also highlight the property from A Private Collection of Contemporary Art & Design, Palm Beach, a beautiful interior where disparate genres complement each other seamlessly. From the iconic craftmanship of George Nakashima and the textured ceramic surfaces of Claude Conover to the painterly abstraction of early Al Held painting and the minimal abstraction of Ethan Cook, this collection illustrates the keen eye of a creative collector. The collection showcases sculpture by Harry Bertoia, sculptural chairs by Robert B. Wilson, and decorative expression by Tony Duquette, alongside fine art and photographs by Julian Schnabel, Jean-Pierre Pincemin, and Edward Burtynsky.
Explore the auction in person at our New York Rockefeller Center galleries from 2–7 June.
