拍卖简介
Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. – William Morris
From 31 May to 15 June, Christie’s is pleased to present The Ann and Gordon Getty Collection: Aesthetic Decoration from Temple of Wings including a selection of furniture, decorative arts, textiles, fine art and books surveying the rich eclecticism of the 19th century.
This online sale salutes Ann and Gordon Getty’s veneration of ‘The House Beautiful,’ echoing principles of the Aesthetic movement in the practice of surrounding oneself with objects that inspire joy, and the celebration of ‘Art for Art’s Sake’. The collection includes works designed by the most notable architect-designers of the Victorian era including Bruce Talbert, William Burges and Phillip Webb, alongside notable American firms like the Herter brothers. The sale features ceramics by William de Morgan and a wide selection of American Art pottery by Rookwood, Grueby and Newcomb, as well as silver by Charles Robert Ashbee and the Guild of Handicrafts. Rounding out this varied selection are textiles by William Morris, John Dearle and Liberty & Co., as well as selection of paintings and books.
Proceeds will benefit selected arts and science organizations designed by Ann and Gordon Getty.
