The Exceptional Sale is the leading global auction platform for the decorative, applied arts and pop and sports culture, bringing together the best of the best. Focusing on provenance, rarity, design and craftsmanship, the sale includes the finest works of art from English and European furniture, clocks, porcelain, silver, Chinese furniture, antiquities, memorabilia and natural history.
This February The Exceptional Sale features the Olympic gold medal from Bob Beamon’s record smashing long jump at the 1968 games, as well as a solid gold vase made by Tiffany & Co. for the Gould family with enamels by Frederick Remington. Ceramics include a rare 18th century Meissen garniture and a massive Wedgwood & Bentley sculpture of the Infant Hercules in black basalt. Among the masterpieces of French and English furniture are a pair of tabourets belonging to Joséphine de Beauharnais, a jewel-like lacquer secretaire by Weisweiler from the collection of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild and a spectacular George II mirror possibly supplied by William Kent to Frederick, Prince of Wales, for the White House, Kew (its pair is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London) and a breakfront bookcase made by Wright and Elwick for Lord James Brydges, the Marquess of Carnarvon and 3rd Duke of Chandos.
And for lovers of both rocks and rock n’ roll, The Exceptional Sale includes a spectacular red tourmaline known as ‘The Y’, porphyry vases by Pierre Gouthière and a pair of Chinese hardstone models of trees, as well as Elvis’s Gretsch guitar, Janis Joplin’s gold vest and an important 1966 painting, Images of a Woman, made and signed by all four Beatles.
