aquatint and soft-ground etching, circa 1879, on wove paper, Breeskin's third state (of four), signed in pencil, with margins, skinning along the image edge from the center lower edge to the upper right (with associated ink loss), surface soiling (particularly at the margin corners), a few creases in the lower margin, a pinhole in the center right margin, a small hole at the lower right margin corner, hinge remains at the reverse of the upper margin corners, otherwise in good condition

Cassatt, Degas, Pissarro, and other Impressionists exhibited signed state impressions, such as this, along with final states. Prominent scholars of Impressionist prints have accepted this as an indication that artists felt their state impressions to be variations on a theme, rather than unfinished compositions (see Mathews and Shapiro, p. 28, 30-31).
