Reference 3970 was introduced in 1986 as the descendant of the highly coveted and exquisite reference 2499 (see lot 2806). Available in all precious metal and a variety of different dials, the model is generally divided into four series with the following configuration:

- 1st series: snap-on full back, gold applied baton hour markers, feuille hands

- 2nd series: screw-down full back, gold applied baton hour markers, feuille hands

- 3rd series: screw-down full back and sapphire display back, gold applied lapidated hour markers, baton hands

- same as the 3rd series but with new serial numbers and delivered with deployant clasps

Production ceased in 2004, replaced by the reference 5970.
