Reference 5059 was introduced in 2002 to replace the reference 5050 (see lot 2649 and 2990). Reminiscent of its predecessor, the reference 5059 possesses the intriguing complication of a perpetual calendar mechanism with retrograde date hand, and is one of the few perpetual calendar wristwatches with centre sweep seconds. Furthermore it is united with another venerable Patek Philippe tradition - the "officer's"-style case featuring a hinged gold dustcover that protects the crystal display back.

The model was available in all precious metal (see lot 2982 for the rose gold version) with Roman numerals on a porcelain-white dial. Production ceased in 2006 and was replaced by the reference 5159.
