According to the Archives of Audemars Piguet, the present watch was sold to Verga in Turin in 1941.
The watch here offered for auction for the first time ever must be considered one of the most appealing Audemars Piguet chronograph wristwatches known to exist to date. With its nearly unbelievable diameter of 38 mm., it is larger than any other vintage Audemars Piguet chronograph wristwatch and joins the celebrated protagonists in the league of oversized 1940s chronographs, most notably Patek Philippe's mythical reference 530. According to our research, reference 5520 of Audemars Piguet was only made in a handful of examples and it is the first time that a rose gold version of this model is offered at auction. As a matter of fact, scholars have so far only accounted for one example in yellow gold of this impressive timekeeper. Furthermore, this model has never been shown or discussed in literature and it is our understanding that the black and white archival image shown here is the only surviving reproduction of this fascinating chronograph.
Of very large size for a wristwatch from the 1940s, it represents the perfect combination of mechanical complexity, attractive design composed of a highly elegant case and superb dial with the blue tachymetre scale, outstanding original and crisp condition and the extreme rarity, lifting this trophy to the elite of 20th century watchmaking and collecting.
