Collation: \kp\KA6 \kp\KB4 \kp\KC-D6; A-Z Aa-Xx6 (\kp\KA1 title, \kp\KA2r translator's prologue, \kp\KA2v tabula, \kp\KD6v blank, A1r text, X6r colophon, X6v de Worde device). 284 leaves (of 288, lacking \kp\kA1.6, B3.4, Cc3-6, X6); X4-6 supplied in photographic facsimile. 4 woodcuts (of 8, without 4 on title), those on F6 and Y1 between borderpieces [Hodnett 451, 362, 477, 538], woodcut grotesque initials. (L1.6 defective, light staining, fore-edges of preliminary quires repaired with loss of a little text, repaired tear in A1.) Blindstamped brown morocco by Leighton, gilt edges. Provenance: a few early English pentrials and annotations, including TR monogram -- G. Boyle, 1978 (flyleaf inscription).
FIRST SEPARATE EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. The Commandments appear in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5, but more usually are found in catechisms. The present work, comprising the Commandments with extensive elaboration including many examples of exemplary behaviour drawn from Scripture, is a translation from the French of Fleur des Commandements; the three 15th-century editions are all extremely rare. Chertsey's version had previously appeared in his translation of the Ordynarye of Crystyanyte (1502). FIRST USE OF TWO WOODCUTS [Hodnett 451 and 362]. STC 23876.
