'Lorsqu'il y a quelque trois ans je me suis trouvé devant un David Budd, je n'avais jamais été en même temps aussi déconcerté et aussi en profonde et indiscutable communication devant une oeuvre nouvelle totalement non classique: [...] il est difficile d'imaginer à la fois une si authentique liberté et une telle rigueur, un tel cynisme désinvolte et un tel ordre aussi chargé d'intelligence que d'élégance.'
