Les éditions Haligon de Niki de Saint Phalle déclinent à l'envi l'imaginaire de cette artiste au style autodidacte qui a su briser les frontières plastiques entre la sculpture et l'objet d'art. L'admiration de Niki pour Gaudí, suite à la découverte du Parc Güell en 1955, insuffle à ses créations une riche vitalité, en réaction aux 'sources profondes et troubles' de ses premières réalisations, comme l'exprime le couple Runnqvist (D. et J. Runnqvist, Une touche suisse, Galerie Bonnier, Genève, 1991). La grande variété des sources d'inspiration, entre mythologie classique, légende païenne et culture religieuse, semble composer alors la transposition moderne d'un conte complexe et fascinant : sous l'autorité des vertus cardinales, La Force et la Tempérance, animaux et créatures fantastiques animent l'espace de leurs parures colorées. Petit Chat vase comme Serpent vase entourent ces 'Nanas' qui séduisent par leurs formes si caractéristiques. Ainsi, il est permis d'entrer dans cet univers singulier en prenant place sur son Fauteuil serpent. Cette conception totale de la création de Niki, où transparaît une certaine féminité, fit dire à Dagny et Jan Runnqvist : 'Cette lecture de sa mythologie se confirme dans le Jardin des Tarots en Italie, où Niki unit magnifiquement ses rêves de la nuit à ses joies du jour'. Niki de Saint Phalle's Haligon works offer innumerable examples of the imagination of this artist with the self-taught style who broke down artistic barriers between sculpture and artwork. Niki's admiration for Gaudí, following her discovery of the Park Guell in 1955, instils her creations with a rich vitality, in reaction to the "deep and troubled sources" of her early work, in the words of the Runnqvists (Dagny and Jan Runnqvist, Une Touche Suisse, Galerie Bonnier, Geneva, 1991). The wide variety of sources of inspiration, from classical mythology to pagan legends and religious culture, seem to create a modern telling of a complex and fascinating fairy tale: under the authority of the cardinal virtues, Fortitude and Temperance, fantastical animals and creatures bring the space to life in an abundance of colour. Small Cat Vase and Serpent Vase surround the Nanas, with their characteristic seductive forms and this unique universe can be entered by sitting down in the Serpent Armchair. The overall concept of Niki's work, which exudes a certain femininity, caused Dagny and Jan Runnqvist to remark: 'This reading of her mythology is confirmed in the Tarot Garden in Italy, where Niki magnificently united her night-time dreams with her day-time joys'.
