DRIVING FROM THE ART FACTORY TO THE PALACE OF LIVING ART
A few sentences about John Baldessari and CalArts

1. When I was living in Santa Monica during my last year at school, John would often pick me up and drive me out to Valencia, and often while driving he would refer to CalArts as the art factory.

2. John once told me (or us) that being an artist was no more special than being a plumber, BUT being an artist was the best thing anyone could do.

3. One of my favorite excursions with the class was to the PALACE OF LIVING ART. This was a wax museum of famous artists such as Michelangelo and van Gogh shown doing their work. As I recall, this place was in the desert and next door to a museum of cars of movie stars.

4. Our classroom at school had video equipment, which we all used and experimented with. John would make his own work in class on weekends or evenings or whenever. So in a way there was no distinction between his studio and ours! Post Studio Art was for everybody! We were often the first people he showed a new work to, and he would ask our opinions about it. The traditional lines between student and teacher were being messed with.
