Saint-Tropez, la jetée vue du chantier naval represents one of the first studies of the celebrated Var port executed by Paul Signac in May 1892.
The artist, who would enjoy a passion for sailing, had just completed a journey onboard the Olympia, a yacht which had taken him from Bnodet in Finistre to the Mediterranean . In a letter to his mother, he wrote: "As of yesterday, I am bathing in joy. Not five minutes from the old town lost amongst the pines and rose bushes, I have found a small furnished dwelling [...] before the golden shore of the gulf, the blue waves come to an end on the small beach, my beach, and a fine mooring for Olympia [...] in the background are the blue silhouettes of the Maures and of l'Esterel [...]. I have enough to keep me% working my entire life. I have just discovered happiness". Saint-Tropez is a revelation for the artist who decides to relocate there. He acquires a house above the beach at Graniers, moves his studio there and completes a number of paintings showing the port and its surroundings.
Signac, the first artist to succumb to the charms of the town, would soon welcome numerous friends who would in turn fall under the spell of the peninsula: Luce, Cross, Matisse, Manguin, Bonnard, Marquet or even Picabia to name but the best known.

L'artiste qui cultive une passion pour la voile achève alors un périple à bord d'Olympia, un voilier qui la conduit de Bénodet dans le Finistère aux côtes de la mer Méditerranée. Dans une lettre à sa mère, il écrit: "Depuis hier, je suis installé et je nage dans la joie. A cinq minutes de la vieille ville perdue dans les sapins et les roses, j'ai découvert un jolie cabanon meublé [...] devant les rives dorées du golfe, les flots bleus venant mourir sur une petite plage, ma plage, et un bon mouillage pour Olympia [...] dans le fond les silhouettes bleues des Maures et de l'Esterel [...]. J'ai là de quoi travailler pendant toute mon existence. C'est le bonheur que je viens de découvrir". Saint-Tropez est une révélation pour l'artiste qui choisit de s'y installer. Il achète une maison au-dessus de la plage des Graniers, y installe son atelier et peint de nombreux tableaux du port et de ces environs. Signac qui est le premier artiste à céder aux charmes tropéziens, y accueillera de nombreux amis qui deviendront des adeptes de la presqu'île, Luce, Cross, Matisse, Manguin, Bonnard, Marquet ou encore Picabia pour ne citer que les plus connus.
