Lloyd Ziff is best known as an award-winning art director of magazines including Vanity Fair, House & Garden, and Rolling Stone. However, throughout his life, photography has been his great passion. He struck up a friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe when they both attended Pratt Art School. In 1968, when Mapplethorpe was living with Patti Smith, Ziff asked if he could shoot portraits of them. Smith published two in her book, Just Kids, in 2010 and credits them as the first portraits made of the couple.
