This portrait is of the artist’s close friend and fellow photographer, Lynn Davis. In 1979 they together developed Trade Off, a project for which they photographed the same subjects and exhibited the work at the International Centre for Photography in New York. Trade Off was Davis’s first exhibition. Her work, like Mapplethorpe’s, explores the form and beauty of the human body during a period of heightened concern about sexuality amid the increasing AIDS crisis in America in the late 1970s and 1980s.
