Clare Woods begins each of her paintings, including Black Vomit, by working from a photograph she has taken of the Welsh or British countryside. This work belongs to a group based on landscapes seen at night, which Woods enjoys because of the emotional tones a nocturnal setting evokes. It is hard to tell exactly what we are viewing as Woods has, in her characteristic way, used the trees and foliage as abstract devices that accumulate across the picture plane, obscuring and complicating our visual access to the scene before us.
