Introduced in late 1960s the reference 1680 was the first Submariner to feature a date indicator as well as the cyclops magnifier. Distinguished by its red printing to the dial, the “Red Sub” as it is known to collectors has become a cult classic.
This particular example is distinguished by its dial, which has discoloured to a particularly beautiful chocolate brown colour, referred to by many as a tropical dial. In addition the luminous material has turned an attractive biscuit colour and is evenly matched between the dial and hands. Last but not least the watch is exhibiting wonderful matching all over patina with strong bevels to the lugs, dirt and debris to under the bezel, between the lugs and in the clasp, a case back stamped indicating production in 1969 and the correct folded link 9315 Oyster bracelet with patent pending dive extension link and clasp stamped for the third quarter of 1970.
