Introduced in 1970 and in production until 1987, reference 6263 and 6265 represented Rolex continued development of a waterproof Daytona following on from the earlier reference 6240. As a combination of calibre 727 higher frequency movement, the larger crown, screw down pushers and the black acrylic bezel, for many collectors reference 6263 represent the ultimate configuration of the Daytona.
Produced in steel, 14k and 18k gold, it was only the precious metal cased version that proudly stated the fact that the movement has been tested Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres for 15 days in 5 different positions at a variety of temperatures. This is announced on the dial with the now iconic phrase, “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified”, providing a beautiful sense of aesthetic balance and overall harmony to the dial.
This particular example is notable for its dial which is in fantastic condition, beautiful strong case with clear hallmarks to the back of the lugs and attractive oxidization, original 18k gold bracelet and desirable 71 end links. In addition it is accompanied by a spare 18k gold bezel, correct and original for the references 6265 so that the new owner can decide how they would like to wear the watch in future.
