“The fluidity of the material blotting out any trace of subjectivity, any notion of depth, light and shade, allowed the artist to concentrate on the formal properties of the canvas – its flatness and its format – enabling colour to take pride of place. In that respect, he favoured simple, centred shapes: firstly, concentric circles, then chevrons and finally simple bands of colour. All those shapes were created in series, each one resulting from its predecessor”.
