Born in Jiuquan, Gansu in 1958, Zhang Lucheng is known for his bold portrayal of herds of cows, horses, camels and desert poplars found along the Silk Road. Drawing from the wealth of immemorial myths, legends and gripping narratives as his source, Zhang depicts his subjects with vigour and might, a sense of strength and confidence palpable in his work. In Heavenly Horses, with spirited, expressive brushwork, Zhang distils the image of galloping horses into highly abstracted forms, resulting in a spectacular frieze of running horses that celebrates the unstoppable force of nature.
