Manifesto of the Communist Party. London: William Reeves, 1888.
细节
MARX, Karl (1818-1893) and Friedrich ENGELS (1820-1895).
Manifesto of the Communist Party. London: William Reeves, 1888.
First authorized English translation of the Communist Manifesto: only two copies have appeared at auction since 1963 (RBH/ABPC). Originally published in German in 1848, the Manifesto of the Communist Party was subjected to a defective English translation in 1850 which rendered the famous opening line, ‘A spectre is haunting Europe’, as ‘A frightful hobgoblin stalks throughout Europe’. The present translation was overseen by Engels himself, with the assistance of Samuel Moore, with whom he had already worked on an English translation of Das Kapital. It remains the primary English translation of this iconic work. See PMM 326 (first edition).
Octavo (183 x 123mm). Original printed wrappers, stitched as issued (wrappers loose from stitching, long split along spine, minor soiling). Provenance: heavily annotated in pencil by an early reader.
