Christie’s is pleased to offer 170 lots from The Collection of the late Lord and Lady Swaythling in a live auction in London on Friday, 27 May. This charming group weaves together the strands of several family collections inherited by David Montagu, 4th Baron Swaythling (d. 1998), and his French wife Ninette (née Dreyfus) (d. 2021), which in time were welcomed into their country house at Newmarket and their London residence.

The sale is led by the vivid group of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings including Deux cavaliers au bois by Kees van Dongen (1877-1968) (£150,000-250,000), reflecting Lord Swaythling’s passion for horses and racing, and a notable selection of paintings by Francis Picabia (1879-1953), the highlight being Notre-Dame, effet de soleil from 1906 (£200,000-300,000).

There are no less than four tiaras being offered – led by an early 20th century diamond and pearl tiara made by Koch (£80,000-120.000), who supplied jewels to the European royal households. A delightful large-scale group portrait of the children of the financier Benjamin Goldsmid (1755-1808), dated 1800 (£80,000-120,000) leads a group of family portraits by Arthur William Devis (1762-1822), inherited via Lord Swaythling’s paternal grandmother, Gladys Montagu (née Goldsmid) (1879-1965), later Lady Swaythling.

There are also works inherited from his maternal grandmother, the highly regarded collector The Hon. Nellie Ionides (née Samuel) (1883-1962),who restored Buxted Park, Sussex, where a George III marquetry commode, attributed to Henry Hill (£25,000-40,000), appears in Country Life images, alongside parts of her esteemed collection of English enamels and Chinese porcelain.
