With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1996 and its subsequent sale on December 13th of the same year.

To the best of our knowledge the present watch has never before been offered in public.

Patek Philippe introduced the reference 3970 in 1986. The model was available in yellow, white and pink gold and platinum. It was produced in four series with the following configuration:
- 1st series: snap-on full back, gold applied baton hour markers, feuille hands
- 2nd series: screw-down full back, gold applied baton hour markers, feuille hands
- 3rd series: screw-down full back and sapphire display back, gold applied lapidated hour markers, baton hands
- 4th series same as the 3rd series but with new serial numbers and delivered with deployant clasps

For a platinum verison of the 3970 see lot number 140 and for a pink gold version see lot 299
The reference 5970 replaced the 3970 in 2004.

A similar model is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches, by O. Patrizzi, Volume 2, p. 271, pl. 1131.
