A Suit of Armor with a Byo-Toji Yoko-Hagi Okegawa Do
Edo period (18th-19th Century)
The armor lacquered brown and laced in blue with orange trim and comprising an iron sixty-two plate hoshi-bachi with a four-stage silver, copper and gilt chrysanthemum tehen-kanamono, the mabi-sashi trimmed with gilt-metal fukurin carved with scrolling vines, the five-lame neck guard terminating in large fuki-gaeshi applied with stencilled doe skin, lacing shakudo florets and gilt-metal taka-no-ha family crests, the mae-date and kuwa-gata gilt-metal, pierced with "boar's eyes" and applied with a circular taka-no-ha crest; the russet-iron face mask forged with deep wrinkles and a hinged nose piece, an applied moustache of horse hair and additional hinged plates designed to cover the wearer's jaw decorated with applied taka-no-ha crests, fitted with three-lame throat guard; the ni-mai yoko-hagi do with shakudo and gold rivets and with the muna-ita and waki-ita decorated in gold and black lacquer finished in an ishime surface, the straps protected by gyoyo applied with gilt-metal taka-no-ha crests, the do mounted with gilt-metal hardware and fitted with six sections of five-lame tassets; o-sode decorated with stencilled doe skin on the kanmuri-ita and mounted with pierce-carved gilt-metal hardware; oda-gote sleeves; ikada-haidate; shino-suneate; saihai; two lacquered-wood storage boxes with leather covers decorated with taka-no-ha crests
