With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1954 with raised gold hour markers and its subsequent sale on 25 October 1954. Further delivered with Cartier Certificate of Authenticity numbered GE2010-50 and dated 26 March 2010 confirming that the watch was retailed by Cartier New York in 1954.
Few "time only" wristwatches by Patek Philippe enjoy popularity amongst collectors to an extent matching the eagerness devoted by collectors to complicated wristwatches. Reference 2526 is certainly one of them and despite not impressing with numerous hands, apertures and push buttons, it captures the essence of haute horlogerie with other, more subtle features: most notably to the connoisseur's eye is the warm ivory-toned enamel dial, a feature which has never been matched as beautifully by any other watchmaker since the 1960s. Not as visibly, but equally exciting to the amateur of distinguished timepieces, is the unrivalled calibre 12-600, not only impressing with the engine-turned gold rotor but its wonderful overall finish too.
Collectors with the ambition to own the most exclusive reference 2526 can either develop their collection into the rarer case metal versions, notably white gold and platinum, or hunt down unusual dial variants or sought-after retailer signatures. The present watch probably represents the pinnacle of the latter category, being, according to our researches, the only reference 2526 highlighted by the ultra exclusive Cartier logo. The combination of the long established "twenty-five twenty-six" values and the unique second signature on the dial, fully confirm by Cartier's own archives, render this masterpiece of 1950s watchmaking a valuable and unrepeatable opportunity for the discerning collector.
Reference 2526
Reference 2526 and its successor 3428 are undisputedly amongst the most elegant and distinguished vintage watches ever made.
Reference 2526 was introduced to the market in 1952 and was Patek Philippe's first automatic watch ever made, starting with movement number 760'000 (delivered in July 1953 to Mr. J.B. Champion, one of Patek Philippe's faithful clients. This watch, fitted with a gold bracelet, is today the pride of a discerning collector). The model features the legendary calibre 12-600 AT which was granted Swiss patent No. 289758 in 1953 for "a self-winding mechanism for a wristwatch movement using the energy supplied by a rotary mass causing an eccentric part to transmit a swinging movement to an organ of the mechanism".
The majority of reference 2526 was cased in yellow gold, a small series in pink gold and an exceedingly limited number in white gold and platinum.
