Born Oels/Silesia, now Poland, 1941; moved to Düsseldorf in 1953. Studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under the direction of Otto Goetz and Gerhard Höhme, 1961-67. Exhibitions include: Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1988; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California, 1990-1991; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, 1991; Sigmar Polke: Join The Dots, Tate Gallery Liverpool, 1995; Sigmar Polke: Works on Paper 1963-1974, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1999; Sigmar Polke: History of Everything, Tate Modern, London, 2004; Capitalist realism and other illustrated histories, Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, Brazil, 2011-2012. He died in 2010.
