Born in Tianjin in 1958, Li Jin was fascinated by painting at a young age when he showed a keen interest in modernist art. Following the advice of the renowned painter Zhou Sicong, Li studied Chinese paintings at the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts from which he graduated in 1983. He currently serves as Associate Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tianjin.
The audacious use of colour and playfulness in Li's paintings are visually impactful. Li is known for his vernacular scenes depicting flirtatious men and women indulging in life's pleasures, based on daily experiences and often with figures modelled on him. A social commentary on the collective mind, Li's work portrays figures with an expressionless guise and distorted bodies that convey a certain sense of isolation and alienation in contemporary society.
