Born in Tianjin in 1961, Liu Qinghe graduated from Tianjin School of Arts and Crafts and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in the late 1980s. He is currently Professor of Chinese painting at the Central Academy.
Through his art, Liu expresses the mentality of his generation who was born in China in the 1960s. His paintings are critique to the urban society and ways to explore his personal identity. Often referred to as "urban ink", Liu's paintings usually depict portraits of girls against a city backdrop. Although the figures' lack of facial expression creates a barrier between the viewer and the subject, this insecure and confused state of mind is realistic and commonplace in the contemporary society. In creating an equal and reciprocal relationship between the painter and the painted, Liu's knowledge of the life and experience of his models transforms his paintings from a simple sketch to a work with expressive quality and relevance to our lives.
