C’est en 1964, à l’occasion d’une soirée organisée par Françoise Sagan à Saint Tropez, qu’Yves Saint Laurent fait la connaissance de Charlotte Aillaud. Cette rencontre marquera le début de leur amitié indéfectible.Tous deux esthètes nés et passionnés d’art, ils partagent aussi une admiration commune pour le travail des Lalanne et la poésie de leur univers : en 1968 Yves Saint Laurent fait recouvrir le buste du mannequin Verushka d’un bronze réalisé par Claude pour sa collection de haute couture tandis que Charlotte Aillaud fait sensation au bal surréaliste donné par Guy de Rothschild, transformée en Pythie sous les doigts de Madame Lalanne.Très vite l’affinité des deux personnalités pour ce couple d’artistes se transformera en amitié commune et donnera lieu à des commandes majeures : ainsi Francois-Xavier réalisera le fameux Chat Anthropomorphe pour Charlotte Aillaud dans son appartement de la rue du Dragon à Paris (vendu chez Christie’s Paris, 18 novembre 2002, lot 64) et l’on se souviendra longtemps du merveilleux salon de musique de Monsieur Saint Laurent, rue de Babylone, entièrement revêtu des miroirs aux branchages de Claude Lalanne ( Christie’s Paris, Collection Yves Saint Laurent et Pierre Bergé, 23-25 février 2009, lot 220).En 1993 Monsieur Saint Laurent commande à Claude Lalanne un impressionnant miroir en pied dans la même veine que ce fabuleux ensemble, en bronze doré et feuilles de cuivre galvanisé, et l’offrira à son amie Charlotte Aillaud. C’est le miroir que nous présentons ici.In 1964, Yves Saint Laurent met Charlotte Aillaud at a party organised by Françoise Sagan in Saint Tropez. This encounter would mark the start of their lifelong friendship.Both born aesthetes and passionate for the arts, they also felt the same admiration for the work of the Lalannes and the poetry of their creations: in 1968, Yves Saint Laurent dressed the bust of the fashion model Verushka in a bronze created by Claude for his haute couture collection, and in 1975, Charlotte Aillaud caused a sensation at a surrealist ball given by Guy de Rothschild, when Madame Lalanne’s nimble fingers transformed her into Pythia of Delphi.Very soon the natural complicity of each of them with the Lalanne artist couple, who had become their close friends, lead to major commissions: the famous Chat Polymorphe bar was thus created by François-Xavier for Charlotte Aillaud’s Paris apartment in Rue du Dragon (sold at Christie’s Paris, 18th November 2002, lot 64) and Claude wonderfully paved the walls of the Salon de Musique at Yves Saint Laurent’s apartment in Rue de Babylone with her fabulous Miroirs aux branchages (sold at Christie’s Paris, Collection Yves Saint Laurent et Pierre Bergé, 23-25 February 2009, lot 220).In 1993, Monsieur Saint Laurent commissioned Claude Lalanne with another large standing mirror in the same style as this exceptional set, in gilt bronze and galvanized copper - the present lot - and gave it as a present to his dear friend Charlotte Aillaud.“What touches me about her is her ability to combine craftsmanship and poetry in the same requirement.
