FIRST EDITION, the issue in card covers with dust-jacket. 'ONE OF THE GREAT DOCUMENTARY WORKS OF ALL TIMES... it would be difficult to overestimate the influence of this work on later photography, documentary, and otherwise' (101 Books). This penetrating work was seen as very dangerous when the Nazis came to power in 1933: copies still with the publisher were seized, and the printing plates were destroyed. With the publisher's printed prospectus for Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts, the universal portrait of Germany of which Antlitz der Zeit forms the basis.
