Exceptionnel tambour à main décoré d'un imposant masque mei. Ces longs masques incurvés constituent l'une des caractéristiques de l'art Iatmul. Cependant, la présence de ce masque sur le tambour est rarissime, sinon unique. La poignée de l'instrument, prenant plus fréquemment la forme d'un oiseau ou d'un crocodile, est ici constituée par la projection du nez se terminant par un animal, certainement un serpent.
Les tambours produits tout au long de la rivière Sépik ont des formes et des dimensions différentes. Le modèle le plus classique étant le tambour à main, tel que l'exemplaire présenté ici, mince et en forme de sablier. On jouait de cet instrument afin d'accompagner les chants du clan lors des cérémonies, telles que l'inauguration d'une pirogue, d'une maison ou d'un rituel. Leurs rôles n'étaient pas limités au sacré, et ils étaient également utilisés dans un contexte profane (Schmid, in Greub, 1985, p.186).
